Question tested

Do , DNA, or blood-related claims establish ancient origin or burial use?

Current read

Biological traces show complexity and possible historical signal, but they are highly vulnerable to handling, conservation, and environmental .

Established Observations

  • DISPUTED claims have been used to argue for a Near Eastern itinerary, but identification and sample-chain limitations reduce their weight.
  • FACTDNA studies report plant, animal, microbial, fungal, and human traces from Shroud-related samples.
  • FACTThe 2026 metagenomic study states that cannot determine whether the Shroud is medieval or two thousand years old.
  • DISPUTEDClaims that the Shroud blood is scientifically demonstrated as human, primate, male, or AB are not securely established according to recent forensic review.

Evidence Quality

Moderate. Some recent work is peer-reviewed and technical, but interpretation is limited by , sample history, and chain-of-custody questions.

Accepted / Conventional Reading

  • Biological diversity is expected on a centuries-handled textile.
  • Mixed DNA and traces are more consistent with accumulated contamination than a clean ancient provenance signal.
  • Blood-type and sex claims have often been publicly overstated.

Challenge / Alternative Reading

  • Some botanical and biological findings may preserve traces of non-European history or burial-related substances.
  • Blood-related chemistry reported by -associated researchers remains relevant to whether the cloth contacted a wounded body.
  • Biological evidence should be retested with modern chain-of-custody controls.

Biology as signal and noise

Biological traces are real. The harder question is whether they are historical signal, accumulated , or both.

Current DNA evidence is better at showing complex handling history than at dating the cloth or proving identity.

Blood claims

Heller and Adler reported blood-related chemistry, while McCrone disputed blood and argued for . More recent forensic caution specifically targets overclaims about human, primate, male, and AB blood.

PARALLAX therefore treats blood-related material as disputed and does not convert it into proof of authenticity.

Open Questions

  • Can new samples be collected under -controlled conditions?
  • Can or DNA patterns be shown to predate European handling?
  • What is the narrowest scientifically defensible claim about the red-image areas?

PARALLAX Assessment

Biological evidence is interesting but currently weakly discriminatory. It does not overturn the stronger dating and evidence.
