Current directionUnresolved / weakly discriminatory

Question tested

Do the image characteristics establish medieval manufacture, ancient burial use, or an unresolved formation mechanism?

Current read

The Shroud image remains technically unresolved, but unresolved image formation does not by itself establish ancient origin.

Established Observations

  • FACTThe Shroud bears faint front and dorsal body images that become visually clearer in photographic negative.
  • DISPUTED-associated researchers argued that the image is not explained by conventional painting.
  • DISPUTEDImage intensity has been argued to correlate with body-cloth distance, but the significance of this 3D behavior remains debated.
  • UNKNOWNNo single image-formation hypothesis has achieved broad consensus as reproducing all reported macro- and micro-characteristics.

Evidence Quality

Moderate to high for direct -era observations; more limited for mechanism proposals because many reproduce only selected features.

Accepted / Conventional Reading

  • The image may be the product of a medieval technique not yet fully reconstructed, a contact-transfer process, low relief, chemical aging, enhancement, or mixed mechanism.
  • A hard-to-reproduce image is not automatically an ancient image.
  • The age question should remain separate from the mechanism question.

Challenge / Alternative Reading

  • The body image has unusual features that simple painting, ordinary scorch, and direct contact do not fully explain.
  • conclusions keep the image-formation question genuinely open.
  • The lack of a known mechanism is one of the strongest reasons the case remains disputed.

What mystery can and cannot do

Image formation remains a real unresolved technical question. It should not be waved away.

But the fact that a mechanism is unresolved does not establish the cloth's age. PARALLAX treats image formation and dating as related but distinct evidence categories.

Open Questions

  • Which reported image characteristics are independently confirmed at microscopic scale?
  • Can a known process reproduce the full-body image without producing excluded side effects?
  • Does the image encode real body-cloth distance or a projection/contact artifact?

PARALLAX Assessment

The image remains unresolved and weakens simplistic painting claims, but it does not currently overcome the radiocarbon and historical evidence for medieval origin.
