Radar coverage

Investigators collected radar data from all known relevant sources, including FAA, military and defense, NORAD-related, and other radar systems.

The NTSB reported data from nine radar systems across five states. That breadth gives the radar record substantial weight.

No coherent incoming missile track

The NTSB reported no coherent radar track intersecting TWA Flight 800, no identified missile or projectile track approaching the aircraft, and no radar sequence judged consistent with an incoming missile.

This weighs against the missile hypothesis, but it is not automatically conclusive.

Unidentified nearby targets

Radar detected several unidentified primary targets in the broader accident area. Some were within several nautical miles of the aircraft.

Their estimated speeds were approximately 12 to 30 knots, which investigators considered consistent with boats rather than aircraft or missiles.

Could radar have missed a missile?

Later NTSB missile-visibility testing demonstrated that intact small missiles could fail to produce an identifiable radar ground track.

No missile appears on radar does not logically equal a missile was impossible. Equally, radar could miss a missile is not evidence that a missile was present.

Open Questions

  • Does the unusual high-speed radar sequence have a fully satisfactory technical explanation?
  • Can independent radar specialists reproduce the NTSB anomalous-propagation interpretation?
  • What radar signatures would be expected from each plausible missile scenario under the conditions present that night?
