Three kinds of benefit
Historical benefit asks whether records are preserved and attributable. Democratic benefit asks whether decisions and restrictions can be audited. Scientific benefit asks whether data support reproducible physical inference. A release can score differently on each dimension.
FAIR data as a practical benchmark
NASA uses findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability as data principles. Applying that benchmark prevents a visually dramatic but context-poor clip from being mistaken for a complete scientific record.
Trust through inspectability
Trust is not produced by asking readers to believe an institution or a whistleblower. It grows when , methods, limits, corrections, and disagreements remain visible.
